South Metro responds to emergency calls for EMS and Fire from three stations. SMFD has a verity of apparatus to respond to different incidents as needed.

Response

South Metro's response in personnel and apparatus varies depending on the type of incident and the location.

A standard EMS response includes an Advanced Life Support (ALS) Ambulance and an ALS Engine company both staffed with at least one Paramedic. This insures sufficient personnel to handle even the most serious medical call.

At full staffing levels: Engine 1 and Medic 1 respond from Station 1 to EMS calls west of Prairie Lane and north of Hubach Hill Rd., including most of the City of Raymore. Engine 2 and Medic 2 respond from Station 2 to EMS calls east of Prairie Lane including Lake Winnebago. Medic 3 and Engine 1 will respond to calls South of Hubach Hill Road and the Pickering area. Thanks to our bond issue, approved by our voters, responce time for a paramedic staffed advanced life support apparatus will be greatly reduced to the southern areas of our district. If any of the ambulances is out of district transporting a patient, the others will respond to cover the entire district.

The response to a fire varies greatly depending on the location and type of fire. Every fire is different, and as such, the response to every fire is different and evolves as the fire progresses. As a general rule, a structure fire in an area served by fire hydrants will consist of Engine 1, Ladder 1, Engine 2, Medic 2, Engine 3, and the district Battalion Chief. In addition it is likely that one or more mutual aid engine companies will respond from surrounding departments. For structure fires in areas not served by fire hydrants, the response will normally be Engine 1, Engine 2, Tanker 1, Medic 2, and the district Battalion Chief, again mutual aid engine companies and tankers are likely to be utilized as well. Natural cover fires (brush fires) will usually bring a Brush Truck, and if the fire is large enough it may also require a Tanker and/or and Engine for additional water and personnel.

The above represent typical responses, but the unpredictable nature of these types of incidents means that every response is different.

Mutual Aid

Mutual Aid is the practice in the Fire Service of calling in apparatus and personnel from surrounding departments to help control a large incident.

South Metro responds mutual aid when needed into surrounding areas, including: Belton, Peculiar, Lee's Summit, Harrisonville, and others. Likewise these departments will respond into South Metro's District when necessary for both Fire and EMS calls.

Staffing

Station One is staffed by the Shift Supervisor (Battalion Chief), an ALS Engine company made up of an officer (Captain), a Fire Specialist (apparatus operator, who may also be a paramedic) and a Firefighter / EMT or second Firefighter / Paramedic. Also at Station One is an Ambulance crew made up of a Firefighter / Paramedic and a Firefighter / EMT or second Firefighter / Paramedic.

Station Two is staffed by an ALS Engine company made up of a Captain, a Firefighter / Paramedic, and a Firefighter / EMT or second Firefighter / Paramedic, and a Ambulance crew made up of a Firefighter / Paramedic and a Firefighter / EMT or second Firefighter / Paramedic.

Station Three is staffed by an ALS Engine company also made up of a Captain and a Firefighter / Paramedic and Firefighter / EMT. This company will respond either in a fire apparatus or an ALS Ambulance depending on the nature of the call and the district resources available.
